Most dumpster rental myths are about permits, your driveway, the price, and what you can load. The short version for Hammond: a dumpster on your own driveway usually needs no permit, you do not have to be home, the rate is flat by size, and almost everything from a cleanout can go in except hazardous materials.
People put off renting a dumpster because of something they heard from a neighbor or read on a national broker’s site. Most of it does not apply here. Below are the eight we hear most at Clean Slate Dumpsters, each with what is true for a rental in Hammond and the towns around it.
You usually do not, as long as the bin sits on private property.
No permit is usually needed when we place the dumpster on your driveway. A public street is different. Placing a dumpster on a public street typically requires a municipal permit. If the street is your only option, tell us when you book and we will help you with the local rules.
Most residential jobs never get near this question. The bin goes on the driveway, or on a level part of the yard, and that is the end of it.
You do not have to be there for either one.
The process is four steps. You choose your size, schedule the delivery, fill the container at your own pace, and call us for pickup. You do not need to be home for the delivery as long as you give our driver clear placement instructions. Pickup works the same way. Call when you are done and you can be at work when the truck comes.
The one thing that helps is being specific. “Left side of the driveway, door facing the garage” gets you a better drop than “in the driveway.”
Not when it is set down the right way.
We place driveway-protection boards under the dumpster’s contact points. The boards keep the heavy steel from scratching or cracking a residential driveway. Our guide to preparing your driveway for a dumpster delivery covers what to clear before the truck arrives.

The damage people worry about usually comes from moving the bin after it is set. Please do not try. The bin is heavy, and repositioning it can damage the driveway or block the truck’s pickup access. If you need it in a different spot, call us and we will relocate it.
With flat-rate pricing, the quote is the price for what it includes.
Our Hammond rates are flat. The 15-yard starts at $299 with 1 ton included. The 20-yard starts at $399 with 2 tons included. The 30-yard starts at $499 with 4 tons included. That covers delivery, pickup, and standard disposal.
| Size | Starting price | Weight included |
|---|---|---|
| 15-yard | $299 | 1 ton |
| 20-yard | $399 | 2 tons |
| 30-yard | $499 | 4 tons |
Two things can add to it, and both are stated up front. Extra days are $15 each. Weight above what your size includes is $65 per ton. Because Hammond is our home yard, there is no mileage surcharge here. The pricing plans page shows every size and rental length side by side.
Almost anything from a cleanout, yes. Hazardous materials, no.
Hazardous materials cannot go in a roll-off container. That means liquid paint, chemicals, solvents, motor oil, car batteries, propane tanks, tires, and any appliance containing freon. The EPA treats leftovers like these as household hazardous waste, because tossing them in with regular trash can pollute the environment and put people at risk. Your parish or city collection day is the right place for them.
The other side of this myth is people leaving out things that are fine. You can put almost any type of furniture in our dumpsters, including couches, tables, chairs, and mattresses. Break down large items or put them at the bottom of the bin to get more out of the space. For the full list, see what you can and cannot toss in a roll-off dumpster. If you are unsure about one item, call before you load it.
Space is one limit. Weight is the other, and heavy material hits it first.
Dirt and sod are allowed, but they are extremely heavy. If you are removing a large amount of soil, use a smaller bin and fill it only half full. That keeps the bin from getting too heavy for the truck to lift. Concrete works the same way. A concrete bin should hold only concrete, brick, or block, because mixing in wood or other debris can mean higher fees at the recycling center.
Yard debris is easier. Branches, logs, and brush can all go in, and cutting large branches into smaller pieces lets you fit more in one load. Our guide to dumpster weight limits and overage explains how included tons work on each size.
Going from a 20-yard to a 30-yard does not take more driveway.
The 30-yard uses the same footprint as the 20-yard, roughly 22 feet long and 8 feet wide. The extra capacity comes from taller side walls. So if a 20-yard fits your driveway, a 30-yard will physically fit too. You just have less room to reach over the side. The 15-yard has a compact footprint and is the one to pick for a tight driveway or a small parking area.

For delivery, the truck needs a clear path about 22 feet long and 10 feet wide to set the bin down, plus overhead clearance free of low branches and power lines. A standard two-car driveway works for most sizes. If access is tight, say so when you book and we will plan the placement.

These are the questions that come up right after someone finds out the myths above are not true.
